doing the development on the most used corporate intranet platform, brings along specific challenges and decisions. progress in the world of sharepoint frontend development, in my opinion, is still underdeveloped. but it can catch up! at this moment branding for sharepoint is like making a fat lady jump through rapidly relocating hoops. for every sharepoint loving engineer that thinks that sharepoint isn’t a fat lady. yes, she is. maybe not for a programmer or a fanatic using powershell. but for us aesthetic connaisseurs she is. it’s a lot of clicking and pushing f5 to see what you did to the monster. for all frontenders now thinking of any ******* reason why you would ever use some platform like sharepoint, when you can build core, lean and mean supermodels without any platform: supermodels won’t fix difficult day to day work! they are for instant satisfaction and yes, they will grow old too. making our fat lady sharepoint jump trough hoops faster may one day make here a real looker that can assist in all your day to day corporate work. examples of tech where sharepoint frontend dev is lacking behind is build automation. like the rest of the frontend world is doing with scaffolding tools like yeoman. this will enable your frontender not only to nicely check his script with lint tools. he will be able to use watch functions to auto compile his styling/branding and unittest his custom written js to beter structure his code. your frontender will thank you for his own good nights rest and you, a probably structured and skilled sharepoint engineer won’t have to enter the chaos world of sharepoint branding to deal with failing code. so you got this far! your reward for reading my first idealistic kickoff of a blogpost are another blog post on ‘sharepoint frontending setup’ and a blog on ‘ ‘frontend trends for 2016’. hopefully i will keep this up! follow my blogpost to find out. no, seriously, please do! geplaatst op 4 februari 2016 5 februari 2016 categorieën frontend development , sharepoint tags design , development , firstblog , forster , frontend , jurgen , kickoff , sharepoint , sp online , webdesigner laat een reactie achter op jurgens front end sharepoint branding setup this will be my blog on what you need to get started for proper sharepoint branding action! it’s kind of a shopping list of things smart people invented before us to make our life way easier. in dutch we have a saying : “beter goed gejat, dan slecht verzonnen” which means something (very freely translated) like “better cleverly borrowed, then badly invented.” so here’s the shopping list, that is going reduce slamming the ‘f5’-button and the vast amount of clicks you do in your daily job as a sharepoint frontender : get with the opensource program open source program? we are doing microsoft things! who needs open source!? the first person bringing this up needs to leave the room. he will stall your progress. the node community has produced some nifty tools that makes the work of a front-end developer a lot easier. this is why stefan bauer came up with a cool ‘new’ way to brand sp . this ‘new’ way uses yeoman to scaffold an lean app to automatically build your styling and use the served files on your local server to easily refresh your efforts in the browser to test it in sp. yeoman.io is the scaffolding tool for fast and easy apps with the components you like! yeoman is a tool that is a setup of nodejs (local light weight server), bower (package manager) and grunt (task runner) to generate apps in different consistencies. this means you can skip the time consuming setup and go straight to developing in a structured way. you can ‘watch’ your files for changes and you can even unittest your code. lint-tools will suggest corrections in your scripty. those last 2 things will make the lead developer happy (if there is one.) in the long run it will make you happy, because you will learn to script better. when using this way of writing styling for sharepoint don’t forget to output the app in https so sharepoint thinks you’re secure… so all systems go! setup is done, now get some ingredients let’s cover the basics and buzzwords. responsive design. for a responsive design in sharepoint i can recommend to not go for the obvious, like bootstrap. bootstrap will effect some basic tags that will screw up sharepoint. this was even more the case when it was concerning sp2010. instead i use susy , like stefan bauer does. i was pleased with the configuration that can be done to the standalone grid in susy. this consists of one small and simple config.js. so i did not look further. but as this is a rapidly evolving world, you might want to be on the lookout for new and better options. to get started with susy check how stefan did it in his git . webparts second person you need to know can give you a good idea what you can do with a display template. his name is elio struyf . besides learning stuff from him, you can get and use his display templates. because he shares them on his github . yes dear dutchies, that’s free of charge. elio will show you how to incorporate angular in a display template , although a bit heavy build upon the sp gui it’s pretty neat. besides this display template he has a variety of nice stuff. for example: did you know that a content search webpart can be a media slider? probably not! these are cool ways to learn how to fit in a js-library in display templates. dive in for more useful stuff! back to an inevitable branding basic: color palette tool the component on the shopping list you probably already know is the tool to compile the color component in the composed look. a thing i learned to do manual before this tool. a task you won’t appoint to your worst enemy. if you didn’t know it yet. use it. it’s easy. future of branding and frontend automation after getting the basics down, there are still more than enough inefficiencies we come across while branding for sharepoint. so in future we can look in to solution to those irritating processes. one of them is automatically put build of the branding in sponline . while this is already done with gulp. it might be nice to copy and replace the task builder with grunt. pure for my preference that is. further more it might be cool to build the core styling/branding separate from the customers styling wishes to up the reusability of your branding. i will continue to blog on my discoveries in frontend (for sharepoint) and this rookie will keep you posted on whatever will make life easier in sharepoint branding. over and out. do you have questions or pointers?
